Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, without initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
